Known for its strength, durability, and sustainable qualities, Sabai grass has been used by local artisans for generations. By transforming this humble natural fibre into functional homeware, we help preserve traditional knowledge while creating meaningful livelihoods.

Crafted for the Conscious Buyer

A perfect choice for the conscious buyer, this eco-friendly placemats and coasters set reflects a commitment to ethical production and environmental responsibility. Every set is handmade using traditional techniques that require patience, skill, and an intimate understanding of the material. Unlike mass-produced tableware, these pieces carry the unmistakable warmth of human touch, making each item unique.

Choosing this Sabai grass placemats and coasters set means embracing a slower, more thoughtful way of living. It supports sustainable sourcing, reduces reliance on synthetic materials, and celebrates craftsmanship that respects both people and the planet.

The Art of Sabai Grass Craft

The creation of Sabai grass products is a labour-intensive and time-consuming process, carried out almost entirely by hand. Once harvested, the grass is carefully sun-dried to enhance its natural strength and longevity. This traditional drying process allows the fibres to retain their integrity without the use of chemicals or artificial treatments.

After drying, the grass is hand-twisted into sturdy ropes by skilled artisans. This step requires precision and experience, as the consistency of the rope directly affects the quality of the finished piece. To ensure a smooth and comfortable surface, the twisted grass is then gently smoothed against tree bark, a natural technique used to remove rough edges while preserving the fibre’s organic texture.

Only after these meticulous steps is the Sabai grass ready to be braided or woven. Artisans carefully shape the ropes into placemats and coasters, paying close attention to balance, symmetry, and durability. The result is a collection of eco-friendly pieces that are both practical and visually striking.

Handmade Beauty in Every Detail

One of the most distinctive qualities of this Sabai grass placemats and coasters set is the subtle variation found in each piece. The texture, weave, and tone may differ slightly from item to item, beautifully showcasing the handmade charm of these one-of-a-kind creations. These natural variations are not imperfections, but rather a testament to the authenticity and artistry behind each set.

The tactile surface of the placemats and coasters adds warmth and depth to your table setting. Whether paired with ceramic dinnerware, glassware, or wooden serving pieces, they bring a grounded, organic feel that complements a wide range of interior styles.

Functional, Durable, and Versatile

Beyond their visual appeal, these eco-friendly placemats and coasters are designed for everyday use. Sabai grass is naturally resilient, making it well-suited for protecting your table from heat, moisture, and scratches. The tightly woven structure ensures durability, while the lightweight design allows for easy handling and storage.

This placemats and coasters set is ideal for daily meals, weekend brunches, or entertaining guests. It transitions seamlessly from casual dining to more formal settings, offering a relaxed elegance that never feels out of place. When not in use, the pieces can be neatly stacked or displayed as part of your table décor.

Sustainable by Nature

Sustainability is woven into every stage of this product’s journey. Sabai grass is a renewable resource that grows abundantly in Odisha, India, requiring minimal water and no chemical fertilisers. Its use supports eco-friendly practices while reducing environmental impact.

At Vayu Earth, we work directly with artisan communities to ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and long-term economic stability. By choosing this Sabai grass placemats and coasters set, you are contributing to a system that values transparency, social responsibility, and environmental care.

A Natural Fit for Modern Living

This eco-friendly placemats and coasters set is designed to complement modern lifestyles while staying rooted in tradition. Its neutral, earthy tones blend effortlessly with contemporary interiors, rustic homes, and minimalist spaces alike. Care Instructions

To maintain the beauty and longevity of your Sabai grass placemats and coasters, gently wipe them with a dry or slightly damp cloth after use. Avoid prolonged exposure to water and direct sunlight, as natural fibres can be sensitive to excess moisture and heat. With proper care, these pieces will age gracefully, developing character over time.
