Sam Father Day's Wishlist - Gifts For Dad Who Wants Nothing

We all know the type. You ask him what he wants for Father’s Day, a birthday, or the holidays, and you get the exact same response every single time: "Nothing. I don't need a thing." While his low-maintenance attitude is admirable, it leaves you in a total panic, especially when you’ve waited until the absolute last minute to shop.
Don't worry, you don't have to show up empty-handed. We took inspiration from Sam (the dad who has everything) Father’s Day Wishlist to find out what a guy who wants "nothing" actually wants (in secret).

With Father’s Day just around the corner, we caught up with Sam, our (Vayu Earth) founder, home enthusiast, and lover of meaningful craftsmanship, to talk about what dads really want.
What does Father’s Day mean to you personally?
Father’s Day, for me, has become much more reflective over time. It’s not something I associate with big gestures or expectations, it’s more about taking a moment to recognise what being a father actually feels like in everyday life. Most of the year, you’re busy, focused on responsibilities, work, and routines, so you don’t always stop to think about it.

What I value most is simply being present at home, spending uninterrupted time together, and appreciating the environment we’ve created as a family. That’s why I’m not overly strict about gifts. But if people insist on giving something, I prefer steering away from novelty items and choosing things with real meaning. The best Father’s Day gifts are the ones that connect to your life in a real way, not just something you open and forget about.
How has becoming a father changed your perspective on gifts?
Becoming a father completely changed how I see gifting. Before, I probably would have gone for something quick or trend-driven, something that felt exciting in the moment. Now, I look at gifts very differently.

I think about longevity, usefulness, and how something fits into daily life. The best gifts for dad, in my experience, are the ones that become part of a routine. Whether that’s a handmade ceramic mug you use every morning or a wooden tray you bring out when spending time with family, those items carry meaning because they’re used consistently.
That’s why I’ve naturally gravitated towards handmade Father’s Day gifts and sustainable gifts for dad. They feel more considered, and they tend to last much longer, both physically and emotionally.
What is the most meaningful Father’s Day gift you’ve received?
The most meaningful gift I’ve ever received was actually incredibly simple: a handmade Feng Shui galloping horses artifact, with a bigger horse, might be the father and the small horse as a kid. It wasn’t expensive or elaborate, but it felt deeply thoughtful. To this day, it still sits proudly on my desk.
What made it stand out was how well it fit into my life. It wasn’t something I used once and put away, it became part of my everyday environment. That’s what I think defines a truly meaningful Father’s Day gift.
There’s a big difference between something that’s decorative and something that’s lived with. The best gifts for dad are the ones that stay visible and useful, whether it’s a handcrafted object, a natural home accessory, or something practical with a strong design element.
What kind of Father’s Day gifts do you personally value now?
I value gifts that combine function and design. Useful things, practical that I can use every day, but also well-made and aesthetically calming.

For example, I really appreciate:
- Meaningful home décor: Pieces that elevate our living space and bring joy every time I see them.
- Natural wood elements: Beautiful centerpieces or kitchen essentials like handcrafted trays and boards.
- Minimalist, sustainable products: High-quality items designed to last, rather than feel disposable.

These types of gifts align with what people are increasingly searching for unique Father’s Day gifts and eco-friendly gifts for him that feel more personal.
For me, it’s about how a gift fits into the rhythm of daily life. If I can use it regularly and it improves my environment, then it’s a great gift.
What kind of gifts would you avoid?
I tend to avoid anything that feels disconnected from how I actually live. Novelty items or overly gimmicky products might be entertaining for a moment, but they don’t last.
I think the issue with those kinds of gifts is that they don’t integrate into your lifestyle. They don’t serve a real purpose beyond the initial reaction.
If you’re choosing Father’s Day gifts, it’s worth thinking about what your dad genuinely enjoys, how he spends time, what his home feels like, what his daily habits are. That’s why practical Father’s Day gifts with a thoughtful design tend to work much better.
Why do you think handmade and sustainable Father’s Day gifts are becoming more popular?
I think people are becoming more intentional with how they shop. There’s a growing awareness around sustainability, but also around quality and meaning.
Handmade gifts naturally feel more personal. You can see the craftsmanship, the materials, and the time that’s gone into creating them. That makes them stand out compared to mass-produced alternatives.

Sustainable Father’s Day gifts also reflect a longer-term mindset. Instead of buying something temporary, people are choosing items that will last and continue to be used.
From my perspective, that shift is a positive one. It aligns with the idea that gifting should be thoughtful, not just convenient.
What would your ideal Father’s Day look like?
My ideal Father’s Day would be very simple. A slow morning, no strict plans, and just time spent at home.
I’d start with coffee, probably in a handmade mug, and just ease into the day. Maybe a shared meal, some time outdoors, and a relaxed atmosphere overall.
If there’s a gift involved, I’d want it to be something subtle but meaningful, something that fits naturally into my space. That’s why I always come back to handcrafted and sustainable pieces.
For me, the best Father’s Day gifts aren’t about making a big statement. They’re about creating small, lasting moments that become part of everyday life.
