Vayu Earth® in Ethiopia: Discovering Artisans, Celebrating Heritage and Empowering Women

Vayu Earth® in Ethiopia: Discovering Artisans, Celebrating Heritage and Empowering Women

At Vayu Earth®, our journey has always been driven by a simple but powerful belief: beautiful handmade products can do more than enhance our homes. They can preserve traditional craftsmanship, celebrate cultural heritage, support artisan communities and create meaningful opportunities for women.

With this vision at the heart of everything we do, we travelled to Ethiopia in search of our next country to explore for distinctive artisan products and sustainable home décor. What followed was an inspiring journey of discovery, meaningful connections and new opportunities that brought us one step closer to our mission of creating a positive impact through ethical craftsmanship.

Representing Vayu Earth® at OTW26 in Addis Ababa

Our visit began in Addis Ababa, where we had the privilege of participating in OTW26 as part of the UK delegation.

The event provided a valuable opportunity to introduce Vayu Earth® to a wider audience, share our company ethos and explore the potential for collaboration with Ethiopian artisans and communities. We were delighted by the interest our vision generated, particularly among government professionals and individuals who recognised the value of combining traditional skills with sustainable business opportunities.

At Vayu Earth®, we believe that sustainability should extend beyond the materials used to create a product. It should also encompass the people behind it, the communities they belong to and the opportunities that responsible trade can help create.

Our passion for handmade décor, ethical sourcing and women's empowerment resonated with many of the people we met. We were encouraged by the positive response to our approach and deeply appreciated the recognition and support we received from Ethiopians who shared our enthusiasm for developing opportunities for local artisans.

For us, this was more than an opportunity to showcase our brand. It was the beginning of conversations about how traditional Ethiopian craftsmanship could reach new audiences while ensuring that the people responsible for creating these beautiful products remain at the heart of the process.

Discovering Ethiopia Beyond the Event

While OTW26 opened important doors, we knew that truly understanding Ethiopia's artisan potential required us to go beyond formal meetings and presentations.

We wanted to meet artisans personally, learn about their skills and understand the stories behind their work. Every artisan has a unique journey, shaped by family traditions, local materials, community knowledge and years of experience. We believe these stories deserve to be heard, respected and celebrated.

Our travels took us to Goba, near the Bale region, and to Hawassa. These visits gave us the opportunity to engage more closely with local communities and gain a deeper appreciation of the craftsmanship and talent that exist across Ethiopia.

Meeting artisans in person is an essential part of our approach. It allows us to understand not only what they create, but also the challenges they face, the resources available to them and the opportunities that could help their businesses grow.

We are particularly interested in exploring how locally made products can be developed for wider markets without losing the authenticity, character and cultural significance that make them special.

For Vayu Earth®, the goal is not simply to source products. It is to build relationships, encourage collaboration and create opportunities that can benefit artisans over the long term.

Putting Women Empowerment at the Heart of Our Mission

Women's empowerment is a central part of our vision for the future.

Across artisan communities, traditional skills can provide an important foundation for economic opportunity. By helping skilled women connect with wider markets, we hope to contribute towards creating opportunities for greater financial independence, confidence and recognition of their talents.

We believe women should have the opportunity to turn their skills into sustainable livelihoods, while continuing to contribute to their families and communities. Their creativity and craftsmanship should be valued not only as part of their cultural heritage, but also as an important contribution to the wider economy.

Our interest in Ethiopia is therefore about more than discovering new products for Vayu Earth®. It is about exploring partnerships that could help local artisans develop their skills, produce distinctive handmade items and reach customers who appreciate the time, care and expertise involved in their creation.

We recognise that meaningful empowerment requires listening, mutual respect and collaboration. Our intention is to work alongside local partners and artisans, understand their needs and explore practical ways to support their ambitions.

By connecting traditional craftsmanship with responsible commercial opportunities, we hope to help create a model in which beautiful products and positive social impact go hand in hand.

A Significant Step Forward: Our MoU with Sidama Region

Sheth Jeebun and . Hageretsion Abebe signing the MoU.

One of the most important milestones of our visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sidama Region.

The MoU was signed with Mrs Hageretsion Abebe, Director General of the Sidama Regional Job and Skills Development Office, in the presence of senior government officials and representatives of the Sidama Regional State.

This was a meaningful step forward in exploring opportunities to collaborate with local artisans and support the development of skills and sustainable livelihoods.

We are grateful for the engagement and support shown by the Sidama Regional Government. Building partnerships with regional institutions is important because it can help bring together the skills of local communities, the knowledge of public-sector professionals and the opportunities offered by international markets.

We look forward to exploring how this collaboration can help identify talented artisans, particularly women, and support the development of handmade products that reflect the region's creativity and craftsmanship.

For Vayu Earth®, the MoU represents more than a formal agreement. It reflects a shared interest in exploring opportunities for local talent, skills development and the promotion of artisan-made products.

As we move forward, we hope to build on this foundation through practical collaboration, careful product development and relationships that recognise the value of the people behind every creation.

Our Sincere Thanks to Dr Tagay Mifta

Team Vayu Earth with Dr Tagay Mifta exploring artisanal goods in Hawassa.

No account of our visit would be complete without expressing our sincere gratitude to Dr Tagay Mifta, whose introduction, support and personal involvement made this opportunity possible.

Dr Mifta took the time to introduce us, facilitate connections and accompany us during our visit. His willingness to support the process helped bring the right people together and enabled us to begin conversations that may lead to meaningful opportunities for Ethiopian artisans.

We are particularly grateful for the time, effort and personal commitment he dedicated to making this visit possible. His support was instrumental in helping us establish connections and explore the potential for collaboration in the region.

Quite simply, without Dr Mifta's introduction and support, this visit would not have been possible. We would therefore like to place on record our sincere appreciation for everything he did to bring us together and help make this journey such a valuable experience.

We believe that meaningful partnerships often begin with people who are willing to share their knowledge, open doors and bring others together around a common vision. Dr Mifta's contribution was an important part of our experience in Ethiopia, and we are deeply thankful for his support.

Looking Ahead: Building a Sustainable Future Together

Vayu Earth and Dr Tagay engages in conversation.

Our visit to Ethiopia has strengthened our belief in the potential of artisan-led enterprise to create positive change.

From participating in OTW26 in Addis Ababa as part of the UK delegation to visiting artisans in Goba and Hawassa, and signing our MoU with the Sidama Region, every stage of the journey has helped us develop a better understanding of the opportunities ahead.

We return with valuable connections, new perspectives and a strong desire to continue exploring how Ethiopian craftsmanship can become part of the Vayu Earth® story.

Our next steps will focus on developing relationships with local partners, understanding the needs of artisan communities and identifying products that align with our commitment to handmade quality, sustainability and responsible sourcing.

Above all, we want to ensure that the people behind the products are recognised and valued. We want their skills to be celebrated, their stories to be shared and their work to reach customers who understand the difference that handmade craftsmanship can make.

At Vayu Earth®, we believe that every handmade product has a story, and every partnership has the potential to create opportunity.

Ethiopia is an exciting new chapter in our journey. We look forward to building meaningful relationships, celebrating the country's rich artisan talent and exploring ways to empower women through sustainable, ethical and responsible business.

Our ambition is clear: to bring beautiful, thoughtfully made products into homes around the world while helping create opportunities for the talented people who make them possible.

Because, for us, true sustainability is not just about what we create. It is also about the positive difference we can make together.
